I spent the night tossing and turning in my bed, thinking about what happened, and having strange and realistic dreams about Antonio leaving in the night without a word. When I woke up, I was half tempted to go to his room, just to make sure he was still there, but stopped myself from going full out creepy on him. I needed to get it together. I was a queen. This was like a diplomatic situation that needed to be handled. If I considered it that way I’d be able to take it on.

So I did the first thing one does in any situation like this. I took a shower. I brushed my teeth. I fixed my hair. I went through my morning ritual, giving myself more time to meditate on it. We all had the day off; it was a national holiday in honor of my brother’s marriage. I had time to come up with a game plan. The one thing I was happy about was that my poor mood had kept me from drinking any more last night.

Next, I opened the windows in my rooms and let the spring sunlight and warm breeze in. I loved watching the world turn back to spring. Fall was beautiful and had a certain chill to it that couldn’t be matched, but now the world was turning back, coming to life once again. The trees were covering themselves in green and blossoming flowers, the sun was cutting through fewer rain clouds. Sometimes the only thing that got me through the winter months was the promise that this would come again. I loved the spring.

So I let it in as I went through my closet, for once picking casual clothes instead of expensive business suits and stylish shoes while getting my hair in a tight bun. This was a lazy day. Well, it was as lazy as I could get, all things considered. There was a still a standard to uphold, even in my own home. Isabel would talk about days spent entirely in her pajamas, wandering around her house with snacks and no bra. I couldn’t quite achieve that level of casual, but I could put on jeans and a t-shirt. I could let my hair stay wherever it landed.

This was going to be a good day, I was sure of it.

I stepped out into the hall and already my mother was walking through, book in hand.

“Morning,” she said.

“How long have you been awake?” I asked.

“I watched the sunrise,” she said with a shrug and a smile.

“I don’t know how you managed to do that,” I said, falling into step next to her.

“The body clock is an interesting thing,” she said. “Even a bedtime of 2 a.m. can’t stop me from watching the sun peek over the horizon.”

I smiled and shook my head. She’d always been an early riser. On Christmas morning it meant she was always waking us up early with tea and pastries in hand, coaxing us downstairs for breakfast and gifts.
